Bootcd os x3/25/2023 It was recognized, but OF wasn't able to read off the disk, using "boot cd(+tbxi)" as well as "boot second-boot" but it was unable to be read. I don't want to get rid of this machine either.ĭoes anyone else here in this sub think they can help me out with this? I'm at my wits' end.ĮDIT: I tested another (known working) optical drive, using the "C" key, the "command+opt+shift+delete" commands, as well as going into Open Firmware and seeing if it was able to use the other generic IDE drive. Admittedly, no one throws out a computer because it works, but I had my hopes up a bit. This would be my first Mac and I want it to run as well as it could have if it were nice and fresh. I'm just getting kind of disappointed at this point. I'm pretty sure a retail copy of OS X 10.5 Leopard would be bootable in a Power Mac G5 too. Is there anything major I'm missing here? Heck, I even unplugged and re-plugged? the optical drive. "boot second-boot load-size=0 adler32=1 LOAD-SIZE is too small ok" I went into Open Firmware again after this, and tried a multitude of commands. Nothing showed up in terms of bootable media. Holding down Option on boot went into the boot manager screen. I also tried the Command+Option+Shift+Delete shortcut, nope. After holding down C, nothing happened in terms of the CD drive spinning up, or any sign of it working, going back to the "flashing Mac and ?" screen again. "You know what, it may be needing to be forced to boot to CD" I thought. I popped it in the CD drive, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and nothing happened. At the same time I ordered a copy of OS X 10.5 Leopard (retail) off a seller on eBay, it looked great and 10.5.8 is the last version of OS X these machines can run anyway. It recognized the drive, which is a 320GB WD Caviar Blue. I bought a new hard drive for the beast on Amazon ($19!) and put it in. I went into Open Firmware, and it still recognized the hard drive, but it didn't want to spin up. ![]() But, it went to the dreaded "flashing Mac with a question mark." I figured the drive was probably dead, as it was an old Seagate unit. When I got home, it powered up fine, with the chime playing and all. I'm going to be relatively thorough here, to see what I can do. There's a problem with it though, it doesn't want to boot from an OS X CD. Hello, I recently bought a Power Mac G5 from a thrift store for the measly sum of $25.25.
